La cirrosis hepática, una forma de enfermar, más que una enfermedad

Son varias las complicaciones que pueden desembocar en una cirrosis hepática, por ello esta puede ser una forma de enfermar, más que una enfermedad en si. De acuerdo con el Doctor Sangro, Director de la Unidad de Hepatología de la Universidad de Navarra en España.
Las infecciones virales causadas especialmente por los virus de hepatitis B y C, el consumo exagerado y recurrente de alcohol y la presencia de enfermedades metabólicas raras como la hemocromatosis, puede causar daño crónico en el hígado, ocasionando que este se convierta en un órgano cirrótico.
La consecuencia de la trasformación en el hígado producto de las enfermedades hepáticas, es la insuficiencia del órgano para cumplir sus funciones, acarreando complicaciones en el organismo. Además, se puede presentar resistencia al paso de sangre en el hígado, originando una hipertensión portal que deriva en sangrado por las varices del esófago o ascitis, acumulando liquido en la zona abdominal.
Un trasplante hepático puede ser efectivo para solucionar de raíz tanto la causa como las complicaciones de la enfermedad. Por otra parte, en los últimos años se están desarrollando formas de atención novedosas, como la terapia celular a partir del propio paciente y la aplicación molecular para reducir la cirrosis.
