Científicos alemanes desarrollaron un microchip que a su vez tiene un sensor que puede ser implantado cerca de tumores para vigilar el crecimiento. El dispositivo mide el nivel de oxigeno en el tejido para detectar si el tumor se expande.
Ingenieros médicos adscritos a la Universidad de Munich crearon el dispositivo como método para detectar tumores que son difíciles de alcanzar.
El encargado de desarrollar el proyecto Sven Becker dijo para la BBC "hay algunos tumores que son difíciles de remover como los que están cerca de la columna vertebral. Existe el riesgo de cortar el nervio uno los remueve quirúrgicamente. En casos extremos es mejor monitorear el tumor si hay una fase de crecimiento pronunciado".
El sensor es implantado cerca del tumor y mide la concentración de oxigeno disuelto en el fluido del tejido vecino. Lo que significa que una baja de oxigeno indicaría el crecimiento agresivo de las células tumorales.
Asimismo, el médico sigue explicando para la BBC que el chip microelectrónico tiene una serie de electrodos que detectan la saturación de oxigeno y dicha información es trasmitida a una unidad externa que parece una caja pequeña que se lleva en el bolsillo.
El desarrollo de ésta novedad medicinal se encuentra en las primeras etapas, sin embargo los médicos aspiran que el dispositivo esté listo para el uso clínico en los próximos 10 años.
